YOU PROBABLY ALREADY KNEW THIS DEPT: John Gielgud was supposed to play the Frank Finlay role, but balked at working with the director of TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE. So he did CALIGULA instead.

The film's utter lack of humor makes it awfully funny (heavy on the awful).   Peter Firth's mega-glum copper, in particular, is an unintentional riot; Jack Warner, he is definitely not.
